In pursuance of an argument on badscience, I'm reproducing (without permission) a figure from Croen et al 2002 J Autism Dev Disord 32 (3):207-15 showing the temporal relationship between diagnoses of autism and mental retardation over time. This relationship suggests that changing categorisation of behaviour may underly some of the reported increase in autism prevalence.
